The Youth Initiative at Broad Street Ministry is an urban service immersion program for youth and young adults located in Center City, Philadelphia. Housed within our own worshiping community, the Youth Initiative is also the educational arm of our Hospitality Collaborative. As an organization we offer a variety of social services, from primary care nurses and meals to AIDS/HIV testing and therapeutic art. We are a mailing address for 2,000 people in the city of Philadelphia, and are on track to serve over 60,000 meals in 2014. The Youth Initiative offers summer, weekend, or alternative break experiences of service, education, and reflection designed to think through the different "pieces" of the "poverty puzzle" facing our national urban centers. Our program is based on an action/reflection model, and an effort is made to take groups to different neighborhoods throughout the city. Service sites include participating in our own meal, clothing, and mail program, working at a large food bank, visiting with the residents of a recovery center, tutoring and engaging young students in Philadelphia, weeding and planting in an urban garden, sending books to those in the Philadelphia prison system, or sorting clothing donations at a local thrift store, among many other things. Beginning every morning with Morning Devotion, breakfast, and lunch-making, participants are lead through the city by a Youth Initiative staff person, returning to Broad Street Ministry in the evening for dinner and an original Evening Program designed by staff. Incorporating artistic elements, our Evening Program is designed to engage the daily experience of participants and reflect through a biblical theme how God is calling us to discipleship as justice-makers and peacekeepers.
