Ukirk Journeying with young adults as we follow Christ

Over the past six month, we’ve conducted a nation-wide search for a new Mission Associate for Christian Formation. It is our delight to announce that the Rev. Dr. Tammy Wiens has accepted the call to serve in this capacity. Though Tammy's new role was designed to cover the broad swath of Christian formation in all of its developmental ages and stages in the denomination, her particular area of focus will be with Christian education/children’s ministries and the UKirk collegiate ministries.

Tammy has experience in both church and higher education administration. Along the way she has worn many vocational hats, including pastor, educator, and curriculum writer. She has a Ph.D. in Christian education and congregational studies from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL.  Her dissertation, “Educating Clergy Online: A pedagogical map to guide and assess spiritual integration” is a qualitative study of online theological education. The research offers insights into the need for faculty to engage both spiritual and ministerial formation as well as embody a community of learning for their students, both online and on campus.

Prior to completing her doctoral work, Tammy worked for several years in Louisville, KY, at the national offices of the Presbyterian Church (USA) where she developed and edited church curriculum and spiritual formation resources.Tammy is married to Rev. Dr. Sheldon Sorge, executive minister of the Pittsburgh Presbytery. They enjoy discussing faith, making music, cycling, and taking long walks—preferably on a golf course! Check back soon as we unpack the blessed new addition to our Christian Formation team.
