Ukirk Journeying with young adults as we follow Christ

594 Centennial Drive
Cullowhee, North Carolina 28713

Greetings from UKirk at WCU!
The UKirk Campus Ministry at Western Carolina University is pleased that you may be interested in a
leadership opportunity with our ministry.

UKirk at WCU was formed three years ago, as a Validated Ministry of the Presbytery of Western North
Carolina. We hope to offer an alternative to existing ministries on campus, to provide faith development
and discipleship opportunities grounded in our Presbyterian/Reformed traditions, while being open and
welcoming to all. While this ministry is new, it follows in decades old footsteps of previous Presbyterian
Campus Ministries at WCU.

Over the past few months our small, but committed, board has worked to clarify our vision for this
ministry and its new leadership. While we can never know where God’s will may take us, we see
wonderful possibilities in creating a true sense of community for a group of students who may, or may
not, feel welcome in other places. Possibilities in creating a true vocational ministry that helps students
understand how weaving Christ’s presence and teachings into their lives, both now and in the future,
will enrich them immeasurably! We look forward to working with our next leader to bring this vision to
life, and to providing the support for them to do so.

We are blessed to call our home a 3,000 square foot building, in the heart of the WCU campus. The
upper level has been leased to a Sports Medicine practice, which provides ongoing financial support to
the ministry. The lower level currently houses the ministry and the non -profit Hillside Grind
Coffeehouse, serving as an outreach to the WCU community. We also lease an adjacent 3 bedroom
house to students, and offer commuter parking in an adjacent parking lot.

WCU’s campus sits in Cullowhee, North Carolina, basically in the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge
Mountains, fifty-two miles west of Asheville. This location in the rural mountains amidst incredible
biodiversity and unique communities, creates opportunities for academic discovery, amazing outdoor
recreation and rewarding community service. The campus itself covers approximately 600 acres, and is
surrounded by mountains, streams and forests on all sides.

WCU’s student body includes over 9,400 undergraduate students, and is one of the fastest growing
campuses in the UNC system. We estimate that over 6,000 of these students live on campus, or in the
immediate Cullowhee area. Approximately 57% are female and 43% male. More than 17% self -identify
as part of a racial minority group, and more than 75 % are between the ages of 18 and 24. It is a vibrant
educational environment.

WCU has been selected as one of three institutions to participate in the NC Promise program. Under this
program, undergraduates will be able to attend WCU for $500 for in-state tuition and $2500 for out-ofstate
tuition. Thus, we anticipate an influx of new students and a greater demand an opportunity fo r
ministry beginning in the Fall of 2018.

If you feel a calling to this type of ministry in this type of place, we would love to hear from you. A more
formal, detailed opportunity listing follows, and we will be happy to discuss any further questions
that you may have.

Blessings!
The UKirk at WCU Board
